The shape of a microphone’s housing can have a big effect on frequency response.  Similar to the shape of a satellite dish, the Moon Mic’s inner housing features a single-dimension half concave sphere, perfect for sound recovery.  There are some other bass drum mics on the market that are shaped like a drum. The shape of a drum is the best shape for enhancement of sound, but it is the worst shape for keeping sound true to the source. That is why a drum is drum and why the Moon Mic has a concaved half-sphere shape.

The Moon Mic is uni-directional. The Moon Mic's outer-curved surface has only one dimension, perfect for sound reflection.

The 8'' speaker diaphragm has been de-tuned, metamorphosing into a microphone focusing in on sub low frequencies.  No longer just a reversed wired speaker - it’s a microphone!

With recent research and development, modifications have been made to the diaphragm. Weight has been added to increase suspended mass. The increased mass works as a natural sink for all frequencies, requiring much less need for gating at high volumes. You will notice more control over the low end. The added weight was sized so the Moon Mics fundamental frequencies would be more inline with a drum fundamentals!  NOTE: As of August 1 2022 all DW Moon Mic microphones starting with the serial #271521 will be called DW Next Generation Moon Mic and will have this feature. 

With the added mass in a Next Generation Moon Mic, proximity becomes more critical to maximize low frequency response. Higher sound pressure levels will increase low frequency response. DW recommends experimenting with close proximity to find your desired sound.

There are three main placement locations, (1) next to the rim for higher frequencies (2) closer to the center of the drum for more sub lows and power or (3) porthole sample for max SPL for aggressive sub frequencies (not recommended for the best acoustic samples).  Experiment with proximity space to produce desired results.

The DW Moon Mic is made of high quality stainless steel components including its grill, washers, screws, black oxide stainless steel screws and non-magnetic mass weight for diaphragms.

Sound is matter of taste. The Moon Mic is not designed to work solo but in most situations it can. It is recommended to blend with your primary mic mids and highs for a full spectrum of sound to your taste. Dedicate the Moon Mic to the subs for best separation for clarity.
